The Venice Biennale is nearly here! Among our most anticipated highlights is The Nature of the Game, an exhibition of films by Francis Alÿs at the Belgian National Pavilion. “Shot in Iraq, Hong Kong, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Belgium, Mexico and many other locations, the works focus on children’s behaviours and how they relate to their surroundings,” writes Ravi Ghosh in our pick of must-see Venice shows. In this 2008 work, Alÿs arranged for a number of kids from Spain and Morocco to walk single file into the ocean from their respective shores, each carrying a toy boat crafted from a flip flop—a pertinent pledge to bridge the gap between Europe and Africa.
