Sundays are for taking things slow à la the two young protagonists of this photograph by the American image-maker Helen Levitt. The 1971 image features in an ongoing retrospective of Levitt’s work at the Photographers’ Gallery in London, which looks to celebrate, and draw renewed attention to her startling oeuvre. “In front of Levitt’s lens, children play and women clutch their hands to their chests,” writes Rosalind Jana for Elephant, in a feature considering the impact of female street photography. “Her photos pulse with a ‘rhythm of lines, surfaces, and values’ (to borrow Henri Cartier-Bresson’s phrase), the busy streets of New York surveyed by [her] sportive eye.” Click here to read on.
