Alicja Kwade, Kausalkonsequenz, 2020

A melodic melding of art and architecture, courtesy of the Polish-German artist Alicja Kwade and her installation of sandstone spheres at the Tadao Ando-designed Langen Foundation in Neuss. The site-specific work forms part of Kwade’s current solo exhibition at the space, creating a seamless transition between the building’s exterior steps and the gallery within. Kwade famously toys with the concepts of space, time, science and philosophy within her work, calling into question our perception of reality. And this piece is no exception—its spheres diminish in size as you descend the steps, or grow bigger as you climb them, resulting in a poetic “time scale that can be read in both directions”.
