Jaclyn Brown, Tender, 2016
As dating apps become ever-more part of the modern experience of relationships, the horror stories of unwanted dick pics and gendered exploitation mount up. A new exhibition at Field Projects, New York, unpicks the rise of these apps alongside social media platforms, questioning the narcissistic tendencies and sexualized culture that they can create. It brings together the work of six female figurative painters, including Jaclyn Brown who questions the projected self-image that is frequently built on fiction. In her playful painting Tender, cute kittens become wrapping paper to the genital package.
