Jeffrey T. Larson, Hanging Laundry, 2009

A supremely satisfying Sunday pursuit, this beautiful depiction of hanging laundry is the handiwork of American painter Jeffrey T. Larson. It is one of many versions of the subject that Larson has made over the years, inspired by the Spanish artist Joaquín Sorolla and his “translation of brilliant outdoor light onto canvas,” to quote Larson. “Working with the figure and the sheets as the subject, I had rare control outside,” the artist explained. “I could use bounced light, reflected light, transparent light, translucent light, flat light, all as compositional elements and artistic opportunities.” And the effect is truly magical.
