Juliana Huxtable, Untitled (Lil’ Marvel), 2015

Juliana Huxtable serving Friday feels in her 2015 work, Untitled (Lil’ Marvel). This hypnotic self-portrait by the Texas-born artist featured in the Hayward Gallery’s 2019 exhibition Kiss My Genders, Elephant’s selected Show of the Times for Issue 39. The exhibit brought together “more than thirty international practitioners who engage in multifarious gender interpretations and explorations of the body,” in the words of Holly Black. Huxtable, on her part, examines the intersections of race, gender, queerness and identity through a variety of media—spanning writing, music, performance and photography—often using her own image to interrogate heteronormative tropes surrounding the body.
