Saul Steinberg, Final Self-Portrait, 1999

A talk to the hand #TBT, courtesy of the inimitable Romanian-American cartoonist and illustrator, Saul Steinberg and his last ever self-portrait. Steinberg was known for his playful antics—from collaborating with the Eameses on cat-covered chairs and decorating bathtubs with illustrated soakers to his brilliant series of people wearing paper bag masks, captured by Inge Morath. As it turns out, the last picture he captured of himself, the same year he died at the age of 84, was no less whimsical, his outstretched, self-decorated hand replacing his own face with a comically stern line drawing.
