Joanna Piotrowska, I Frowst, 2013–14

This photograph by Joanna Piotrowska is included in this year’s Berlin Biennale, titled We Don’t Need Another Hero (yes, it’s named after the Tina Turner song). Currently celebrating its tenth edition, the curators have invited artists who confront the anxieties that stem from recent major geopolitical shifts, seeking out a variety of projects that explore it on both a collective and an individual level. Piotrowska’s image is taken from Frowst, a wider series in which she invited families and friends to re-enact old photos found in their family albums. As adults, their poses become disjointed, hinting at a deeper psychological layer that remains with us from childhood. The results are as beautiful as they are unsettling.
