Kelli Connell, Sunset, 2006

Myself and I… Designed to make you do a double take, this image forms part of a decade-spanning series, titled Double Life, by American photographer Kelli Connell. In each of the series’ scenes, the same model, Kiba Jacobson, appears twice, “performing two roles in a semi-fictive relationship,” writes Alex Merola in a 2021 feature for Elephant. Inspired by the realisation of her own fluid sexuality, and philosopher Judith Butler’s interrogations of immutable gender identities, Connell says she “wanted these photographs to address the idea that partners can both mirror and contrast one another”, shattering preconceived relationship clichés.
