Liz Arnold, Day Tripper, 1997

Day Tripper is a new exhibition at Focal Point Gallery, which brings together the work of painter Liz Arnold (1964-2001) with two contemporary artists, Maria Farrar and Samara Scott. The show reflects on the original and inventive practice of Arnold, who lived her teenage years in Southend-on Sea, with paintings that explore fantasies involving a cast of cartoon-like absurd characters, from mutant bugs to militant drumsticks. Maria Farrar (previously featured in Elephant issue 37) explores the intimate narratives that take place in domestic settings, while Samara Scott makes use of everyday items such as toothpaste, hair gel, food pigments and make-up to create her large-scale installations. The exhibition is on show until 13 October.
