Loïs Mailou Jones, La Baker (detail), 1977

International Women’s Day may have come and gone, but we should be celebrating women artists all year long. Which is why @RepaintHistory, an Instagram account founded in 2016 by Canadian art fanatic Pegah Kargar, is a key follow. Like others of its kind, the account spotlights oft over-looked female creatives, and their stories. This striking painting is the work of Harlem Renaissance artist Loïs Mailou Jones (b. 1905), who Repaint History informs “overcame racial and gender prejudices to become a successful and influential painter, designer, and educator”. During her seven-decade career, Jones taught David Driskell, Alma Thomas, Elizabeth Catlett and many more. Read Charlotte Jansen’s 2019 profile on Repaint History for Elephant here.
