Rising Angola-born artist Lola Keyezua is putting elderly sexuality on the map with her latest body of work, titled Never Too Old To Cut The Banana When Erected and currently on display at Galerie Bart in the Netherlands. Comprised of performative photographs and a short film, the series features Keyezua’s grandmother intimately engaging with a banana. The effect is a pertinent musing on the ways in which older women are all too often “typecast as either the sweet grandmother or the doddery old maid, always [remaining] a sexless stereotype” writes Charlotte Jansen for Elephant, as if pleasure is only a privilege of youth.
