Louis Quail, 12, from the series Big Brother

Photographer Louis Quail’s series Big Brother is an intimate documentary of his brother Justin’s schizophrenia. “It utilizes multiple sources of documentation to show his life from different perspectives; his art, my photographs and narration juxtapose with medical and police records,” Quail explains. “The work reveals a system in crisis, but at its heart is a love story.” This image shows Justin with his on-off partner Jackie (“He kissed me on the sofa at the Level Crossing,” she says), and encapsulates the photographer’s loving, sensitive but unflinching portrayal of mental health issues. The work will be shown as part of Photo50 at London Art Fair 2019.
