Luo Yang, Jian San, 2017

This arresting image was captured by photographer Luo Yang for her project GIRLS, a multi-faceted study of contemporary Chinese female identity. It features in an ongoing exhibition curated by Irish fashion designer Simone Rocha, centred around the feminine in art. “Yang’s portraits are stylish, subversive, and raw, a quality that becomes literal here, as the warm hues of San’s clothing blend with the carcasses and meat chunks hanging around her,” writes Madeleine Pollard of Yang’s unflinching protagonist in a piece on the show for Elephant. “Like many of Yang’s subjects, San stares back at the viewer, somewhat indifferent, somewhat defiant.” Read the full feature here.
