Architects Madeline Gins and Shusaku Arakawa believed that “by challenging and heightening the senses in a perpetual state of tenuousness, the human immune system would strengthen daily”, wrote . These are the Reversible Destiny Lofts in Mitaka, Tokyo, a series of nine apartments comprising “technicolor cubes and cylinders stacked in rows of three”. Inside, a “martian floor, climbable office pods, tubular bathrooms and earthy, pebble-lined bedrooms” ensure that the inhabitants are kept on their toes—whether this will guarantee them eternal life, however, remains to be seen.
