Mindy Lee, Reassembled Mother, 2018

Have you ever thought about the connections between clothing and childbirth? Artist Mindy Lee has—and she’s even turned her old maternity clothes into canvases. A flesh-toned, diaphanous patchwork is Lee’s collaboration with her son, Reassembled Mother. Stained with acrylic paints represents the artist’s amorphous body; fragile and protective, stretchy and strong, the ethereal imprint of Lee’s figure, both peaceful and pained, on the material. Her work reflects the many physical transformations a body goes through during birth and pregnancy, inside and out, and also touches on issues around the function and form of maternity clothing, often designed to conceal or reveal, rather than comfort and support the figure. Lee’s work is included in The Flesh of Thought, a group exhibition at Blyth Gallery, Imperial College London, until 1 November 2019.
