Miriam Cahn, Unser Süden Sommer 2021, 5.8.2021 (detail), 2021

Curated by Cecilia Alemani, the 59th Venice Biennale’s headline exhibition is filled with wonderful paintings, and we’ve selected some of our favourites for your viewing pleasure. Included in the round-up is the eerie work of Swiss painter Miriam Cahn, in which “the faces of animals and humans merge and melt to reveal the flesh that lies just beneath the skin”, writes Louise Benson. “A hazy glow drenches Cahn’s scenes, situating them in a surreal dreamworld where violent symbolism is broken by humour and humanity”. Discover more about Cahn’s idiosyncratic oeuvre, as well as the show’s other must-see paintings here.
