Na Chainkua Reindorf, Lara, 2021

The 59th Venice Biennale opens this month, and we’ve just curated a selection of its must-see shows. Included is the Ghana pavilion’s forthcoming exhibition Black Star: The Museum as Freedom, its title an allusion to the symbol at the centre of the country’s flag. The show will feature large-scale installations by Afroscope, Diego Araúja and Na Chainkua Reindorf—an example of whose work can be seen here. On her part, Reindorf’s pieces “will subvert historically male secret society traditions,” explains Emily Steer, “expanding on the story of the Mawu Nyonu, a mythical secret society of seven women who are deeply connected with the elements”.
