Naomi Frears, At Night

For European residents the biannual clock change is always something of a shock, with plenty of people still managing to miss appointments or turn up to work at the wrong time despite the aid of smartphones and digital clocks. At this time of year it also serves as a stark reminder of the dwindling daylight hours and the long, cold winter ahead. St Ives-based Naomi Frears encapsulates the feeling of the engulfing darkness in her painting At Night. The ghostly depiction is full of rough texture that seems to reveal layer upon layer of deep, blueish hues. This could be inspired by her workspace at Porthmeor Studios, a famous artist enclave that features spaces that are built right on the beach, with gigantic windows looking over the vast sea. She is currently exhibiting at Beaux Arts London, until 30 November.
