Nick Goss, Commute, 2018

Nick Goss has an eye for the details that tell a bigger story, as seen in his narrative paintings of cityscapes, landscapes and interiors. Whether it is the idle weekend afternoon spent strolling, or twitching feet on the long commute in, his interest in personal observation roams far and wide. The first museum show for Goss has just opened at Pallant House Gallery (until 9 June), where the influence of such figures as Edward Burra, Eileen Agar and Richard Hamilton can be strongly felt. As Goss said in an interview with Elephant in 2016, “I’m interested in the detritus of modern life, the things that people leave behind and what that says about the people that inhabited those places.”
