Noemi Stysiak, Conan, The Soothsayer, 2021

A Tuesday mood. This insouciant smoker is the handiwork of Noemi Stysiak, a recent graduate from Glasgow School of Art. Stysiak is one of a number of ascendent artists to feature in our two-part series spotlighting some of the best new talent to have emerged from UK art schools this summer. “[My work] combines my memories of small-town Poland in the 1990s with the experience of life as a low skilled migrant worker and reference socialist realist and capitalist worker propaganda,” she tells Louise Benson, adding that her painted female protagonists represent “Stakhanovite vs girl boss”, with a “sprinkle of folklore and Slavic mythology”.
