Rae-Yen Song, I Love You Barrbara, 2017

We can probably assume that love, however you feel or express it, is going to be occupying at least a little space in your mind today. This image of cavorting, cajoling, canoodling couples is by Rae-Yen Song, and she originally made it as a valentine for her boyfriend. The star-shaped characters dance and cuddle in the swollen imagination of the central figure, and all of this love has given their heart a luminous glow. It’s hard not to empathise with these characters and delight in their heady scene—like much of Song’s enthusiastic, idiosyncratic, ruby-rich work, more of which is on tour around the UK with Jerwood Arts’ Survey, currently in Cardiff at G39.
