Rose Wylie, Park Dogs, 2017

Rose Wylie borrows from life and film in her exhibition at Newlyn Art Gallery & the Exchange, depicting everything from characters found in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds to some more seemingly light-hearted images of lido frolicking and dog walking. Don’t be fooled though, many of these paintings actually recall her childhood memories of the Blitz. Park Dogs, with its happy-go-lucky canines, is paired with a more ominous panel depicting wartime aeroplanes roaring through the sky.
