Ryuichi Sakamoto, New York City, 1989

Kyoto has held its expansive photography festival for close to a decade now, but this is only the second time that Tokyographie has launched in the capital, as something of a taster for the main Kyotographie event. With exhibitions adapted from the larger programme and adjusted to “Tokyo’s spirit” and roughly connected by a theme described as “Vibe”,  this is a chance to see exceptional photography in a variety of spaces throughout the metropolis. These include acclaimed portrait photographer Albert Watson’s alluring black-and-white portrait of the Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Kensaku Seki’s experimental, overpainted images that shine a light on the emotional and physical struggles endured by record-breaking athletes. Tokyographie runs at various venues until 12 January.
