Sally Mann, Bean’s Bottom, 1991

The intimate photographs of Sally Mann are currently on show at the Jeu de Paume in Paris, in her very first retrospective. It offers an overview of four decades of image-making, from an artist who has always drawn directly from her personal life to shape her work. Frequently turning her lens on her own family, she has courted controversy at times for her unflinching display of children at rest and at play. But it is the deeper sense of memory, desire and mortality conveyed in her images which has cemented her reputation as one of America’s great photographers, documenting life in the South to ask questions of history, identity, race and religion. The exhibition is on display until 22 September.
