Sebastian Kite, We Will Meet in the Place Where There Is No Darkness, 2017

Art Night, London’s biggest free festival of contemporary art, is migrating to Waltham Forest next summer, overseen by new artistic director Helen Nisbet (previously at Cubitt). Through a range of commissions, the one-night celebration of art, culture and the city aims to respond directly to the local area’s distinct identity. Much of this engagement is brought to life through Art Night’s Open programme, an opportunity for London’s artistic community to participate in the festival with proposals of projects in response to Art Night’s site-specific nature and annual themes.

One such project in last year’s edition was by architect and artist Sebastian Kite (pictured), an installation that played with light and darkness while a dancer moved within it. Judges include our own deputy editor Louise Benson, as well as artist Larry Achiampong (previously interviewed in Elephant here), writer and curator Paul Clinton, creative director for Waltham Forest Sam Hunt, deputy chairman of Phillips Svetlana Marich, Helen Nisbet and director of Art Night Open Zarina Rossheart. The open call is now live; apply here.
