Shiro Kuramata, Chair-Wall, 1970

“The function of design should not be just about whether it is practical or not. Enchantment should also be considered as function,” the lauded Japanese designer and artist Shiro Kuramata once said—a mantra encapsulated in this brilliant bringing together of a chair and a wall to form one whimsical entity. Kuramata was a true innovator, who championed minimalism and surrealism in equal measure. He devoted himself to reassessing the relationship between an object’s form and its intended purpose, revolutionising design in postwar Japan in the process.
