Stephen Shore, Steel Town, 1970s

Who else is enjoying a slow start to their week? In this sun-drenched image by veteran American photographer Stephen Shore, two friends chat and smoke convivially on a bench outside a senior citizen club in the north of the United States. The picture was taken as part of a photographic report commissioned by Fortune Magazine in 1977. Shore travelled westwards from New York state through Pennsylvania to eastern Ohio for the purpose “in search of everyday American life in colour”, as Ravi Ghosh writes in his feature on a new photo book of the series, published by Mack. The result is a poignant depiction of the crumbling Rust Belt states and their inhabitants. Discover more here.
