Sune Lindström, Kuwait Water Towers, 1965

A stripy start to the week, courtesy of the Swedish engineering company VBB, who in 1965 were invited by the Kuwaiti government to create a modern water distribution system for Kuwait City. The result was five groups of sprouting water towers (31 in total) designed by VBB’s chief architect, Sune Lindström. Dubbed “the mushroom towers” in acknowledgement of their playful shape, the striking structures are made from reinforced concrete, painted with bold blue lines, and hold 3,000 cubic metres of water each.
