Tadao Ando, Casa Wabi, 2014

An art foundation worth planning a holiday around, Casa Wabi, on the outskirts of Puerto Escondido, Mexico, was conceived by the Mexican painter Bosco Sodi and designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando. The multi-building complex is intended to “promote the exchange of ideas between artists of various disciplines and local communities”, the architect’s studio has explained, and takes formal inspiration from the palapa, a pavilion-style building local to the region. This, paired with Ando’s signature use of concrete, has resulted in an architecture that is both traditional and modern, and in perfect harmony with its setting.
