Tetsumi Kudo, Cultivation by Nature and People Who Are Looking at It, circa 1970

Happy World Heart Day! The heart motif has popped up all over art history, from Andy Warhol to Jim Dine—not to mention its powerful symbolism in the paintings of the Old Masters. Tetsumi Kudo takes it in a decidedly different direction, with soil, hair, paint and resin combining to create a sticky pink heart slightly closer to the real live organ than feels comfortable. The sculpture in question was first exhibited at Christophe Gaillard gallery in Paris, where the gallery is currently exhibiting Kudo in dialogue with the works of Czech artist Luboš Plný—until 13 October. Don’t miss it.
