In 1976, op-art legend Victor Vasarely designed Fondation Vasarely, this “madcap centre” just outside Aix-en-Provence in France, explains Louise Benson in an archive feature for Elephant. “A total experience of art and architecture as one, it realises Vasarely’s vision for a ‘laboratory of ideas’,” she continues, “with the building itself creating a series of playful optical illusions.” Made up of hexagonal modules intended to be traversed at random, the eye-popping structure makes looking at art “a participatory event where every perspective counts”.
