Vivian Maier, Untitled, 1956

Happy birthday Vivian Maier! The mysterious street photographer, who was born on this day in 1926, gained posthumous acclaim after hundreds of thousands of her photographs, film and negatives were discovered in an abandoned storage unit. Maier’s images of life in Chicago and New York City, where she worked as a caregiver and nanny, have been lauded as a significant chapter in American street photography, as her archive continues to be catalogued. To date, she is mostly known for her black and white images, but The Louisiana Art and Science Museum is presenting a major exhibition of her stunning colour photographs until 26 May.
