To Be a Woman, directed by Jill Craigie, 1951

An exhibition at British Academy of Film and Television Arts in London this weekend celebrates over ninety “female firsts” from BAFTA’s film world. This image is from To Be a Woman, by director Jill Craigie, who created documentary films as well as being a screenwriter and highly vocal feminist. Although there were British female directors before her, many see her as the first female film director in Britain to receive such a level of critical acclaim.
