Xiao-Yang Li, Offerings to Pythia of the East (XII), 2017

Xiao-Yang Li’s new body of ceramic sculptural works is not only slightly surreal and very adorable, but a study in the relationships between space and surface. Throughout her practice, Xiao-Yang Li’s focus is on the mythical; representing human forms through a lens that’s preoccupied with ancient artefacts and the “primeval female form”. According to her gallery, Narrative Projects, Li’s goal “is to free the subject from the constraints of time; make it timeless”. The artist is showing at the London Art Fair, which opens in January 2019, ahead of her first solo museum exhibition at Mexico’s Museo Leonora Carrington later that month.
