Yoshimoto Nara, Sakhalin, 2014

Happy Birthday to Yoshimoto Nara! Born on this day in 1959. The Japanese artist is most famous for his distinct aesthetic that borrows from pop culture and anime in the form of painting, sculpture and drawing. However, an exhibition titled All Things Must Pass, but Nothing Is Lost / Precious Days Around Me” at Pace/MacGill Gallery in New York, focuses on his relatively unknown photographs. Featuring both black-and-white and full colour images, the show chronicles a body of work that dates back to 1983, when Nara travelled to Beijing and Taiyuan, capturing life in post-Mao China, and more recent projects including a pilgrimage to Sakhalin, in far north Japan, where he reconnected with family roots.
