Yvonne Rainer, Privilege, 1990

How often do we see the experience of menopause depicted on screen? In 1990 Yvonne Rainer did it exactly that, featuring women over the age of forty pre- and post-menopause in Privilege. This was just the beginning, the film takes some unexpected turns from here, described as “a witty, risky work about sexual identity and the unequal economies of race, gender and class.” It will be screened during the new London exhibition, Relating Narratives: A Common World of Women, which opened this weekend at The Horse Hospital, drawing together female artists who focus on women in their work.
