Annegret Soltau, Selbst, 1975

If you’re planning a trip to Arles for the city’s annual photography festival, don’t miss curator Gabriele Schor’s exhibition A Feminist Avant-Garde, foregrounding “the trailblazers who helped to define art by women”, in the words of Madeleine Pollard in a feature on the show for Elephant. Included is the work of German artist Annegret Soltau, who, Pollard explains, “was inspired to turn her drawings of women ‘that were enclosed, torn and split’ into a ‘palpable experience’.” In this claustrophobic 1975 piece, Soltau “spun her face in black thread to the point of ‘deformation’ and ‘pain’, before eventually reaching for the scissors and freeing herself.” Read the full story here.
