Elizabeth Catlett, New Generation, 1991

The esteemed American artist Elizabeth Catlett is best known for her stirring exploration of the African American experience in the second half of the twentieth-century, rendered in bold graphic prints and sculptures. Encouraged by her mentor Grant Wood to “take as her subject what she knew best”, much of her output paid tribute to the strength and enduring dignity of Black women. This tender depiction, however, is dedicated to the bond between father and son, and is deeply moving in its sweet simplicity.
