Manuel Litran, Claude Lalanne Making a Mould for Yves Saint Laurent, 1969

What’s your favourite artist/fashion designer collaboration? High on our list is the sculptor and designer Claude Lalanne’s contribution to Yves Saint Laurent’s 1969 haute couture offering. Lalanne brought her playful brand of surrealism to the now iconic collection, making two gilded casts—of a model’s breasts and stomach—which were each added to a diaphanous chiffon dress (one black, the other blue). She also created whimsical finger jewellery by casting the model’s digits in copper. This brilliant photograph gives us a sneak peek at the artist’s fiery process, and was taken by Manuel Litran at the Lalannes’ country house near Fontainebleau.
