Masahisa Fukase, Untitled, 1972

You might not recognize his name, but Masahisa Fukase was one of the group of photographers—alongside the world-famous Shomei Tomatsu, Eikoh Hosoe, Noriaki Yokosuka, Nobuyoshi Araki and Daido Moriyama—who founded Workshop Photography School in Japan in 1974. The peak of Fukase’s career was his work Ravens, which he began in 1976, following his divorce from his wife (and muse). Fukase’s drinking led to a near-fatal fall in 1992 that left him in a coma for twenty years, until his death in 2012. This picture from 1972, before the start of his demise, will be shown at a major exhibition on Fukase at Foam in Amsterdam, opening this week.
