Noel McKenna, Tied Up Dogs Rose Bay (6), 2018

In Noel McKenna’s paintings we are often asked to think a little deeper about the inner lives of our pets. His new exhibition at Darren Knight Gallery in Sydney, Tied Up Dogs Rose Bay, takes its cue from one of the most obviously melancholic moments for pet dogs, when they’re tied up waiting for their owners to return. Here, we see two dogs dwarfed by the lamppost they find themselves attached to and the surrounding empty street—one gently strains on its leash, the other is wide-eyed, as they wonder where one earth their owner might have gone.
