Polly Borland, Morph 7, 2018

Artists are really into tights: from Man Ray to Louise Bourgeois, Sarah Lucas to Ma Qiusha, there’s just something intoxicating about the stretchy, slightly saucy undergarments. Australian photographer Polly Borland is one of twenty artists who have played with pantyhose in her work, presented at an exhibition that traces the trajectory of tights in contemporary art. Borland—who once took the Queen’s portrait—is known as a fashion and portrait photographer but last year began to squish bodies into stockings for a new series Morph. The inspiration, she said at the time, was the dream sequence in Dumbo. Borland’s Morph 7, is included in the group show Gossamer which opens today at Carl Freedman gallery, Margate.
