Ajarb Bernard Ategwa, Posing with my Parrot, 2021
At Dulwich Picture Gallery, a new exhibition “considers the enigmatic motif of the ‘woman in the window’,” writes Madeleine Pollard in her piece on the show for Elephant. The display is made up of everything from ancient pottery and Dutch Golden-Age paintings through contemporary photography and sculpture, Pollard explains, with the aim of revealing “how this enduring image has been made and remade over time”. Included is this beautiful painting by Cameroonian artist Ajarb Bernard Ategwa. Rendered in a bold, graphic style and featuring beguilingly patterned fabrics, it shows a mysteriously faceless female figure perched beside a window with her pet parrot. Click here to read on.
