Motoko Ishibashi, After Bath 3, 2021

Saturday subversion à la Motoko Ishibashi in collaboration with fellow artist Urara Tsuchiya and fashion photographer Yuto Kudo. This supple smoker and their accompanying pal form part of the trio’s new series Assholes, created during the pandemic, which seeks to reimagine and destabilise traditional Japanese bathhouses or sentō. “Sentō are frequently defined by their strict rules, from gender segregation to etiquette on indoor shoes and showering before entering the baths,” writes Louise Benson in a feature on the series. “The trio playfully subvert these guidelines, sporting an array of colourful wigs, mesh bodysuits and face paint before the lens”—with surreal, and sexualised results.
